So you wanna be attractive?

I follow a lot of blogs on tumblr that post pictures of healthy food, skinny girls working out, and motivational quotes. Because I, like many of you, often loose track of my goals of working out and being healthy. As we all know, tumblr can be a scary place. It’s a place where people come to share their inner most thoughts and feelings. The one desire I see most often on my dash is this, “I just wanna be pretty/attractive/beautiful/sexy/etc…”

I’m not here to bash anyone who wants that. I want that. Who really doesn’t? I’m here to help. In the science of attraction, there’s one ingredient to rule them all! And it’s confidence. You can be the fittest individual out there, but if you don’t have confidence, you’re beauty doesn’t stand out.

So how do you get confidence? It’s hard, I know. It’s hard to be confident when you know how many times you have failed. It’s hard to be confident when you know how much further you need to go. It’s hard to be confident when you see people around you achieving their goals. It’s hard. Take a deep breath. You’re not alone. We all have our insecurities, our dark nights, our struggles. So here’s my advice…

Do something you love. Find something you enjoy, and do it. Even if you’re scared you’ll fail. Even if you don’t know anybody. Even if you’re terrible at it. Smile and do it. Failing at something is worth it, if it’s something you love. In life we all have to do things we hate - reading assignments, washing the dishes, running. You can either choose to complain about the things you hate, or rave about the things you love. There’s a thing in the world of public speaking called, emotional contagion theory. It means that your audience tends to feel the same emotions you, as the speaker, emit. If you choose to speak positively about the things you don’t enjoy, and also proudly talk about the things you love doing, people will feel that.

Do you ever realize how your friends get more attractive the longer you know them? When you get to know people, they somehow become more beautiful. So, let people in. Be honest with strangers. Be honest with friends. Listen to people and respond with sincerity. You don’t have to talk about every dirty detail, but if you do decide to open up, even a little bit, make sure you’re true to your heart. For the most part, people know when others are being fake. And it’s a huge turn off. Remember - when we see the good in people, the genuineness, we tend to forgive the bad. And we all have a past. We’ve all made mistakes, embarrassed ourselves, lied, or cheated. Here’s a cliche line, “Every saint has a past. Every sinner has a future.” And it’s so true. We are all redeemable, we are all good at heart. Be confident in who you are and true to who you are, and the right people will notice!

I write this post more for me than for anyone else. I hope this helps someone.

Like every year, Summer has began and I have already destroyed all my hopes of finally being productive during the season when I actually have time for myself. Every year I tell myself I will read. Read like crazy. Finally pick up the books that are simply taking up space on my overflowing bookshelf. I will exercise. It is sunny and I will run (more like walk) multiple times a week. Fruits are finally in season, so most of my diet will consist of juicy fruits…and perhaps a few vegetables. But, let’s face it, none of that is going to happen. It never does. I stay up late watching Youtube videos, wishing I made my own. I sleep in until I don’t have enough time before I go to work to go outside. And I stuff my face. My diet yesterday: Cap’n Crunch, Mac ‘n’ cheese, Taco Bell, and more Cap’n Crunch.
As I’m preparing to attend university in the fall and finally move out of my parents’ house, my list of things to-do grows exponentially by the day—and my motivation has curled up in the corner of my room under a pile of dirty laundry, never to be found again—until I muster up enough energy to clean my room. And no matter how many times I make a list of to-do’s, or how big I can write it all down on a poster on my wall, my chances of success are slim.
I know what you’re saying—if I think negatively the outcome will be—let’s say it together—negative. However, if past predicts future: what absolutely needs to get done will get done, and what could wait until later will join my motivation for the rest of the Summer.
But not this Summer.
I said that last year.
But I mean it this time.
I mean it this time……
